2006 Passat Stereo Removal

Print this articleRemoving the stereo unit from your 2006 Volkswagen Passat may prove necessary when performing upgrades or repairs to the vehicle's audio system. Base models for the 2006 model year include a standard AM/FM CD-player and an eight-speaker system, while optionally equipped vehicle's feature an upgraded ten 600-watt system, 6-disc CD-changer, in-dash navigation and satellite radio. Although the standard and optional stereos differ considerably, the removal process for both units are relatively the same. (ref#1)

Turn off the vehicle and open the hood.

Disconnect the black-colored negative battery cable from the battery, using an appropriate size wrench, or socket with ratchet .

Pry along the left and right corners of the plastic bezel surrounding the radio, using a plastic non-marring pry tool.

Extend the two trays located above the stereo unit, by pressing them inward and releasing them.

Pry the top corners of the plastic radio bezel to disengage the remaining retainer clips. Carefully dislodge the top portion of the radio bezel from between the radio unit and the trays above.

Lay the bezel on top the the center console; do not disconnect airbag warning indicator wiring connection the from the bottom rear of the bezel.

Remove the four Torx screws that secure the radio unit to the dash, using an appropriate size Torx screwdriver.

Grasp the sides of the radio and slide the unit out to expose the main wiring harness and antenna cable connections at the rear.

Disengage the locking lever for the large square-shaped main harness block and disconnect the main harness from the rear of the radio. Disconnect the antenna connectors from the radio, by pressing and holding the unlocking tab on each harness and pulling each harness from its receptacle. Remove the unit from dash.

Installation1

Connect the square-shaped harness to the corresponding connection at the rear of the radio. Place the locking lever for the main harness in the downward locked position.

Connect the antenna's wiring harnesses and slide the unit into the dash opening.

Replace the four Torx screws that secure the radio unit to the dash, using an appropriate size Torx bit.

Fit the radio bezel over the radio unit. Make sure the bezel clips match the retainer slots before pressing the bezel in place. Be careful not to pinch the wiring for the airbag warning indicator while installing the bezel.

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery, using an appropriate size wrench, or socket with ratchet.
